McCullough’s 1st Win

It was fitting that Richard McCullough, grandson of a founder member of North Down Cycling Club Eric Dunne, won the first club race ever to have used the Kirkiston circuit. Richard, an acknowledged expert on the waves, demonstrated that he is just as good on two wheels as he is using the power of the wind. Like a sizeable number of yachtsmen, Richard has in recent years taken to the bike to try and improve fitness levels and found themselves ‘hooked’. Indeed Richard has begun to show. promise in open races and is competing in the tough Donegal 3 Day this weekend.

At least it stayed dry for the race at Kirkistown but was very windy, with a headwind on the back straight.25 started in 3 groups. The 12 man middle group proved strongest, taking some time out of the 5 man scratch group which split before falling back to join the middle group. Richard McCullough was out-sprinted by Alan Lavery of Currans for the overall result but was the North Down winner.

Henry Wins in Drogheda

In his second sortee south of the border this year North Down’s Stuart Henry made it two in a row with a convincing win in the Coombes Connor Classic race in Drogheda. From the first lap of the four lap race Henry was on the offensive getting away in several breaks, only to be pulled back by a fast moving peleton.

However, with less than 20 miles to go the decisive move was made and once again it was Henry who was lining out the large bunch. Eventually the elastic snapped and the Regent House pupil found himself part of a seven man break. Worryingly for the North Down supporters one of those in the break was top sprinter Peter Williams.

As the finish line approached most thought it would be a formality for Williams, but Henry had other ideas. With 200m to go Henry came off Williams’ wheel to take a clear and well deserved victory.

Ireland Call-up for Henry

After his solid performance in the Tour of the North at Easter Regent House schoolboy, Stuart Henry has got his second call-up for the Ireland Junior team for the Manx Junior Tour, which will take place over the May Bank holiday. This is one of the toughest races in the UK calendar, but it is a great opportunity for Henry to rub shoulders with the best young riders on the mainland and Europe.

Henry, who spent last week in Switzerland with the junior squad, has been in sparkling form on the domestic scene this season. Currently he is ranked number one in the Irish junior rankings, but the three day race in the Isle of Man will prove to be a huge challenge.
