Cyclists Support Local Charities

The organisation of a mammoth event such as the Bangor Coastal Challenge Cycle is an all year round affair, but the event organiser, Terry Nicoletti accompanied by Harry Scott from North Down Cycling Club had one of the more pleasant  duties to perform, the presentation of the charity cheques to the Ulster Hospital.  In total a sum of £8,000 was presented to Dr Roy Harper Consultant in Diabetes and Dr Kevin Dynan Consultant in the Stroke Unit.  In fact the following three departments at the Ulster Hospital benefitted from the 2009 Bangor Coastal Challenge Cycle:-  Diabetes, Cardiology and Stroke Units.

This is an incredible sum, but it should be noted that such a sizeable amount of money was only possible through the valuable financial assistance of the event’s many participants and sponsors, including Bike It Cycles, Grand Parade Belfast, Vittel Spring Water, and North Down and Ards Borough Councils.  Bikeworks of Bangor kindly provided much appreciated mechanical backup for the event.  Over the 8 years of the event a staggering sum of over £60,000 has now been raised.

At the cheque hand over, Terry Nicoletti praised the willing band of helpers from North Down Cycling Club who have worked hard to make this one of the biggest charity cycles in the country.  He also said that the unbelievable participants, numbering over 700 on the day, who took part in less than favourable weather conditions. Mr Nicoletti pointed out that:… ‘they must be commended for their spirit and resolve in completing the event’.  Terry reminded everyone that next year’s Bangor Coastal Challenge will again be promoted by North Down Cycling Club and will take place on Sunday 20 June. Let’s hope the weather will be much kinder in 2010 than it was in 2009.
