Emmerdale Cyclists!

Following the enormous success of this mammoth fundraising event, originating in Aberdeen some seven years ago, the famous Emmerdale Extravaganza will be coming to Northern Ireland for the largest event yet and North Down Cycling Club has been asked to participate. The event will take place on the 7thof June next year and offers the public the opportunity to meet with the celebrities of the popular television programme.

As well as short recreational cycles with the ‘stars’,there will be other opportunities for the public to interact with these celebrities of the small screen. Events such as off-road driving and even aerobatic displays will be on offer,as well as the usual stalls and family entertainment.

Bokhara Night

Once again the Bokhara will be the place to be this Sunday night when Flo. Millar organises another of our special Bokhara nights. These occasions have grown in popularity as they offer not only excellent value but a relaxed social environment to reflect on the season which has just passed. We are indebted to Flo for organising these events and to Jahirul Huqe providing us with such lavish fayre and at £12.50, the value is really tremendous. If you haven’t yet booked your place, get in touch with Flo immediately.

It’s AGM Season

The first of this year’s AGM’s will be Cycling Ireland’s in Dublin on the 6thOctober. North Down Cycling Club have forwarded to proposals to this meeting for consideration. Both refer directly to the development of Under 16 riders. The first is to try and clear up confusion which appears to currently exist as to whether youth riders can up-grade or not. The proposal is that with the consent of the Youth Commission, riders who have reached their 16thbirthday might be given permission to up-grade to Under 18 level. The second is to give the Youth Commission the right to enter Under 16 riders in specific Junior/ Senior 2 events. This would enable the Youth Commission to better prepare young riders for demanding continental races.

Two other dates for your diary must be Cycling Ulster’s AGM on 4thNovember and our own on 12thNovember. A club by definition is a group of people working together for a common cause. The strength of that club can be gauged by the numbers who actually ‘work together’. Thankfully, as was demonstrated at the Coastal Challenge, the Primary Schools’ Skills night and our many other promotions, North Down Cycling Club has been blessed with many members who are only to willing to ‘pull their weight’. The club committee, in many senses, is the most important organ of the club and it requires the skills and expertise of a wide variety of members if it is to function effectively. It is obvious, therefore, that everyone should be prepared to pull their weight and not let the load fall on a few.

Recreational Cycles

Thanks to the favourable weather in recent weeks, the numbers turning up for recreational cycles continues to rise. These cycles are open to anyone and details can be found on the club website at: https://www.northdowncc.com/
